In August of 2000, the Miami Dolphins organized a historic event to honor one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history — Dan Marino. On August 23rd, more than 90,000 fans filled Dolphin Stadium to celebrate Marino’s legendary career.
At the request of Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga, television producer Scott Woolley was tasked with creating and producing the three-hour live event. Broadcast nationwide on CBS, the celebration became one of the most memorable tributes in sports history.
Woolley and his team used 14 cameras to capture every moment of the emotional farewell — from Marino’s walk onto the field to the roar of the crowd that had cheered him for 17 seasons. For Woolley, the project was more than a professional assignment — it was a personal honor. As a close friend of Dan Marino, he considered the opportunity to help tell Marino’s story and celebrate his legacy one of the proudest moments of his career.
