Tequila and the Blue Agave

So here is an important fact about Tequila. All Tequila ‘must’ be made from the blue agave plant… mostly. So the reason I say mostly is to be classified as tequila, the Mexican government say the spirit must be at least a 51% derived from the blue agave (with the rest made up from another neutral spirit), many of the popular brands we see in the United States are made with 100 percent blue agave. There are about 270 species of Agave plants but only the Blue Agave can be used for Tequila. Brands like Rock N Roll Tequila only use 100 percent blue agave. Most brands that will use pure blue agave will print it on the label. So for most people who have at one time had a terrible Tequila experience most likely drank a “mixto” tequila. A mixto Tequila would be a bottle made with a lower percentage of agave and are typically very cheap..
